Not very friendly for a media center based computer
First off, this computer sure does look pretty! However, don’t let the looks fool you, this is really not a wise investment. For those looking to purchase a hassle-free all-in-one unit, beware. First off, like another reviewer noted, there is no remote control. You can buy one from Sony after the fact if you would like. If you have ANY intention of playing games on this computer you are completely out of luck. I tried to play Biosphere, only to realize that the graphics card is completely incompatible. What’s worse is that there’s no way to upgrade the graphics card. You’re pretty much stuck with what you’ve got. Want to play Worlds of Warcraft? Ain’t gonna happen. The nice big HD screen sure would be great to use to play your Playstation 3 or X-Box wouldn’t it? Yeah, that’s not going to happen either. There’s no way to connect another source to broadcast to this screen.

Want to use Blue Tooth? Better buy an adapter; it’s not built in.

The pre loaded DVD playing software completely clashes with Windows VISTA, so your viewing capabilities are pretty stilted. You can do it, but it takes a lot of jury rigging to get your settings right.

Let’s talk about reliability and support. The computer comes with a 1-year warranty with on site service and 1 year toll-free phone support. That sounds pretty good right? Well, my computer failed to boot after a mere 6 months of use. I called customer support and they informed me that I could use a system restore. Problem is….they don’t include the disc. Their system restore is stored on a partition of your hard drive. Since that didn’t work for me, they informed me I could BUY a system restore disc for the paltry sum of $50 BEFORE shipping. If you’re like me and need your computer running 24/7, then you end up paying another $21 for expedited shipping, bringing your total close to $75 for a disc that SHOULD have been included with your product originally. At no point did the technician offer or mention this mythical “on site” servicing. I asked what would happen if my hard drive had actually failed, and wondered if there was a Sony authorized service center anywhere……nope you’ll have to send it in to their service center and wait 2-3 weeks for them to fix it. Pretty unacceptable if you ask me.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a computer that you can have for a few years and continue to use, then you should look elsewhere. It’s missing some key features and there’s no way that you can upgrade any of the internal components. Personally, I’m kicking myself for not spending my $1800 elsewhere.

RUN!
I purchased two slimlines about 8 months ago. This is my first negative review to write about any company or product but I am compelled. Both desktops broke down within the first two months within 3 weeks of each other. After a nightmare with their technical support I sent them both back to be repaired. I am now sending them both back again after another nightmarish experience with the overseas technical suppport. Their technical support team claimed that it is because of the small size and compenents. I attempted to see if they would exchange these slimlines for a larger traditional desktop. I was willing to pay more. They would not. Prior to my experience with their technical support and customer service I would have bought another HP. Now I will try another brand.

HP Pavillion S3400F Slimline Computer
The computer was received promptly which is what I have typically found when ordering through Amazon.

This is the first computer I have purchased for some time, I usually build them, but the small size and low price made this impractical. I also found that this was a good way to try out Windows Vista without the pain of a fresh install, not to mention the cost which is only a little less than the price of this computer.

All in all the computer works well and appears to be reliable. The only issues I have experienced are due to Vista which would not read my network drive, and had an issue with one or two of my older programs. But for the most part Vista is ok.

Getting back to the computer, it is not a machine for someone that wants to adjust performance etc, because the two card slots are not full height so upgrading sound and video will be difficult. Great Machine!
Great price, quite fast, and BluRay works nicely in Media Center. However, the fan is a little too loud, it does not have Wireless N built in (I checked, but I could be wrong), and it should have an eSata port for an external drive to support HD playback.

Overall, I am very pleased!

No Good Even For The Money
I bought this computer in hopes that the OS would work better than my 2002 Media. Alas, it did not. The computer itself works OK aside from it getting hot if left on too long. The OS, however, has too many glitches that the cheap price isn’t worth the headache. I would not recommend the Vista version.

computer okay….keyboard horrible
The computer is okay (u get what you pay for) but I am on my second wireless keyboard. The first did not work right out of the box and after 30 minutes of being hassled by a barely english speaking agent out of india and 7 days later I received the 2nd wireless keyboard. After 5 days of it working, we starting getting a message saying we were holding down the ctrl key. Needless to say, i went out and bought a non HP wired keyboard, and have had no problems.
